School History
The Barbara Jordan Career Center (BJCC) has a proud legacy of preparing students for success beyond high school. Formerly known as the Houston Technical Institute and later the Barbara Jordan High School for Careers, the campus underwent a major transformation by graduating its last class as a magnet school in the spring of 2018. Beginning with the 2018–2019 school year, BJCC became Houston ISD’s only dedicated career center, serving students from across the district with specialized career and technical education programs.
In January 2019, the district and community celebrated the opening of a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, marking a new chapter in the school’s history.
The center is named in honor of Barbara Jordan, a trailblazing leader who graduated from Wheatley High School, became a Texas State Senator, and later served as a U.S. Congresswoman. Her legacy of leadership, education, and public service continues to inspire the mission of BJCC—empowering students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in college, careers, and life.
